It is difficult to describe therapy in general statements because it varies depending on the personalities of the psychologist and the patient, and the particular problems you are experiencing. It is not like a medical visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions and at home. I work with the belief that our thoughts direct our feelings and behavior. So if you have an unrealistic thought, as in "I should be successful in everything.", you are likely to feel much disppointment in your life. Therapy will aim to understand how you got that belief and then modify it. Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks: There are no guarantees of what you will experience, but both uncomfortable feelings of sadness, guilt, or anger, and reductions in feelings of distress, better relationships, and solutions to problems may result. Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. You should take this information along with your own opinions of whether you feel comfortable working with me. If you have questions about my approach, we should discuss this whenever it arises. If your doubts persist, I will be happy to refer you to another therapist for a second opinion. I normally conduct an evaluation in the first session when we can decide if I am the best person to meet your treatment goals. If psychotherapy is begun, I will usually schedule one 60-minute session per week at a time we agree on, although some sessions may be longer or more or less frequent.
